Deputy Director

Position Summary:

A rare opportunity has opened for a leader who is passionate about driving measurable and lasting change in the nation’s nonprofit leadership structure.  Latinos for Leadership Excellence And Diversity (Latinos LEAD) was founded in 2017 and has demonstrated the impact of its theory of change by placing more than two dozen Latinas and Latinos on nonprofit boards since 2022.  Through major private foundation multi-year grants, Latinos LEAD is ideally positioned to expand and extend its proven nonprofit governance diversity programs to major cities of the western United States.

The board of Latinos LEAD sees the newly created Deputy Director role as a crucial component in its succession plan for the organization’s founder and executive director.  Motivated to advance authentic ethnic diversity in nonprofit leadership, the successful candidate will be a positive and enthusiastic self-disciplined professional, well-organized administrator, resourceful program leader, and a tactful strategic collaborator. 

We have essentially created a market; our Deputy Director should find this entrepreneurial environment to be exciting, motivating, and challenging.  This is a leadership role for a fearless and determined executive.

While there is no single ideal set of qualifications and credentials, applicants and nominees should present a strong track record of progressively greater responsibilities in the private or nonprofit sectors, marketing/sales/business development accomplishments, and must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills (this is a firm requirement). Strong candidates may have experience in a wide variety of professional fields.  A bachelor of arts in business, marketing, communications, or related major is required; a graduate degree or equivalent in business management, organization development, or nonprofit management is preferred.  

Organization & Program Management, Administration, and External Relations

  • Support the development of and lead the execution of operating goals in meeting the core strategic priorities of the board of directors.
  • Carry out routine and continually evolving administrative and programming tasks of an innovative and growing business model.   
  • Learn and carry out Pathways to LEAD, the program designed to recruit highly talented Latinos to serve on the boards of thriving nonprofit organizations. 
  • Listen closely and prepare public and internal executive recruiting materials that accurately reflect the hopes, plans, and leadership skills needed by our nonprofit clients.
  • Bring optimism, persistence, patience, diplomacy, timing, and insight to business development; we strive to bring value through a collaborative and discreet senior consulting model.
  • Conduct and supervise excellent client relations and contract administration oversight
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate staff and vendors in roles to carry out executive recruiting, data management, accounting, website admin, etc.
  • Support the operation of the Latinos LEAD administration, including regulatory and tax compliance, legal and fiduciary filings,
  • Represent Latinos LEAD at exhibits, workshops, seminars and speaking engagements at conferences and conventions of nonprofit industry associations, Latino professional member associations, leadership development, and Latino community development.
  • Remain abreast of trends, materials, innovations, and professional development opportunities in the fields of executive recruiting, nonprofit senior consulting, nonprofit management, Latino community development, and leadership development.

Organization Growth & Development

  • Collaborate with the founder and board to ensure the organization’s administrative capacity aligns with its growth.  This will include learning and implementing the full range of small organization operations: Budgeting, accounting, human resources, communications, marketing, outreach, and strategic planning.
  • Manage increasing segments of information technology, human resources (recruiting, reviews, staff deployment/workload balancing, career progression) with related internal communications and budgeting/finance duties.
  • Continually consult research, benchmarks, and other relevant market and practice findings to identify and implement promising practices.
  • Monitor, document, and prepare recommendations and reports to improve internal systems, particularly in an environment of fluid market dynamics, institutional needs, and fiscal constraints.
  • Mentoring, coaching; be an accessible, approachable, and sensitive confidant for nonprofit leaders who desire to see more diverse governance teams, particularly those overcoming internal and social concerns about the value of diverse management teams.

Qualifications

  • At least seven years in a senior management position at a nonprofit organization, foundation, private corporation, or government agency. Understanding the nonprofit model, board practices, and the chief executive/board relationship is an absolute must.
  • Rigorous academic record.  Superlative business and proposal writing skills are required.  While candidates with advanced degrees in public administration, business, organization development will be emphasized, Latinos LEAD recognizes that excellent applicants may bring non-traditional assets in these areas. 
  • Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to myriad priorities
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are essential; this is a must
  • Passionate about the Latinos LEAD mission and impact
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in organizational settings
  • Relate and collaborate with clients, board, staff, and consultants in a transparent, direct, and substantive manner
  • Remain focused in the face of pressure, delivers against timelines, not intimidated by tasks/time limitations

Salary & Benefits

  • The salary for this role includes an annual base of $85,000 with supplemental compensation paid for carrying out executive recruiting contracts.  A history of this supplemental compensation and the industry-standard formula will be shared with finalists. Health insurance and other benefits will be provided as individual circumstances dictate.
