Heal the Bay is an environmental nonprofit established in 1985 that is dedicated to making the coastal waters and watersheds in Greater Los Angeles safe, healthy, and clean. We use science, education, community action, and advocacy to fulfill our mission.
History of Heal the Bay Dorothy Green (1929-2008) founded Heal the Bay in 1985. She began her career as a water quality advocate in 1972 when she worked on a campaign to pass Proposition 20, the ballot initiative that established the California Coastal Commission. Dorothy’s discovery of untreated wastewater spilling into Santa Monica Bay spurred her to bring concerned citizens together in her Westwood home. This effort eventually led to the founding of Heal the Bay. Together, this group successfully ended Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant’s dumping of semi-treated wastewater into the Bay, and their grassroots legacy lives on in our work. Dorothy named the organization “Heal the Bay” because it communicated hope. Her approach of encouraging collaboration among those with contrasting perspectives was the hallmark of her style. She set the tone of positivity reflected in today’s organization’s culture. LA Times Memorial: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2008-oct-14-me-green14-story.html Our Impact Since 1985, we have been a strong and trusted advocate for Santa Monica Bay. However, a healthy Bay requires a healthy LA. By protecting the coastline, restoring our waterways, and advocating for a clean water policy, we are working toward equity, safety, and access for all.
